Sharing knowledge: Innovation through collaborative researchng

At our company headquarters in Mönchengladbach, Germany, we develop and produce high-performance greases, special lubricants and coolants for almost every conceivable application and requirement. Achieving the very best result for our customers is our top priority.

More than 20 percent of our employees work in the field of Research & Development, constantly seeking new and improved compositions to accommodate ever-changing customer requirements and to stay true in the long term to our reputation as being an innovation leader.

We rely on collaboration with respected research institutes, who work alongside us and contribute their knowledge of chemistry and application technology. Together we develop innovative compositions for a stable, efficient, environmentally friendly and future-proof fluid process.

German Aerospace Centre (DLR)

We have embarked on a strategic partnership for innovation with the German Aerospace Centre. In doing so, we are building important bridges between research and industry, as well as between product ideas, innovation and the market.

By sharing specialist knowledge, we are developing a new generation of coolants for tomorrow, which are designed to reduce tool wear and machining times in the manufacture of the latest materials.

As part of this close collaboration, we are working on an initial project focusing on coolants for machining fibre composites. Today, approximately 50 percent of construction materials in the aviation sector are already made from carbon fibre reinforced plastic.

Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences

Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences is one of our long-standing collaboration partners. Together we have been exploiting synergies between industry and science for 20 years, creating important links between theory and practice. We are continuously striving to extend this strategic partnership.

Under the Germany Scholarship programme offered through the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences, we are supporting a student from the Process Technology faculty through to master’s degree completion.

Westsächsische Hochschule Zwickau

Collaboration with the West Saxony University of Applied Sciences, Zwickau, is firmly rooted in the history of Rhenus Lub. For more than 20 years, we have been researching coolant compositions of incredible variety for the metal-working industry with experts from Zwickau. As soon as a promising coolant for highly complex machining steps is produced in our labs, it is tested by the University in Zwickau on large pilot systems to test its suitability for the respective machining process.

In a large-scale study supported by outside funding, the University is testing—in close collaboration with ourselves—coolants for the machining of carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFP). The study is revealing the composition that a coolant must have to be able to machine carbon fibre composites in the future.

BiSafe — Microbiology and biological safety

With Dr Volker R. Stoldt by our side, we are assisted by an expert adviser and specialist on all aspects relating to microbiology. With his company BiSafe, the Senior Scientist at the Heinrich-Heine University in Düsseldorf has specialised in the safe, efficient, sustainable and legally compliant handling and use of biological agents and biocides.

Since the use of biocides in coolants has been heavily restricted under the Biocidal Products Directive, research into alternative ingredients is imperative for the future. Working together with Dr Stoldt, we are researching new preservation techniques for the coolant sector. Using his bioanalytical measurement techniques, which are extremely quick and precise at the same time, we are obtaining some useful results. As managing director of BiSafe, Dr Stoldt advises Rhenus Lub customers and monitors complex production facilities on our behalf.

Starrag Group

Consistent optimisation in machining processes: this is the goal we are pursuing with the Swiss Starrag Group. Together with the world’s leading manufacturer of precision machine tools for milling, turning, boring and grinding workpieces made from metal, composites and ceramics, we are running extensive test series to research how coolant and machine tool interact in machining processes. This is because every single process parameter influences the outcome — the machine tool as well as the tool, workpiece, fluid and filter.

Working with the Starrag Group, we are developing a sustainable solution to make the interaction of innovative coolants and state-of-the-art machine tools as efficient as possible—to provide maximum added value to our customers in the metal-working industry.
